Political Discourse
Jul. 13th, 2016 12:31 pmLots of people had lots to say on Facebook yesterday about Bernie Sanders' endorsement of Hillary Clinton. Because of the harassment I've received from the Bros in the past, I chose not to participate. But this is LJ, which no one reads anymore, so I'm perfectly comfortable sharing my initial reaction to the news:
It's about fucking time!

Just for the record ...
Jul. 19th, 2013 02:14 pmDear Barak,
As a white woman, I cannot understand what it must be like to be followed in stores or have people lock their car doors when you're near for no reason other than the fact that you're black. It must be horribly demeaning, and I wish I knew how to make people stop believing the shit that prompts them to do it.
However ...
If I am alone in an elevator, and any man who is a stranger to me gets on, I become nervous. My muscles tense up, I clutch my purse a bit closer, I edge a bit closer to the door (if he hasn't positioned himself between me and it), and I hold my breath until the doors open and I can escape. And I make absolutely no apologies for it. It's not a matter of race, it's a matter of sex, and a matter of my safety.
Although I absolutely understand why you might think otherwise, not every slight or negative reaction you get is because you're black. Sometimes it's just because you're a guy.
Chalcedony

Jun. 4th, 2013 08:48 amHe was a Democratic Senator of the old school, and he wasn't afraid to call a spade a spade or a Republican governor an idiot. He worked up to the day before he died. He was also the last remaining WW II veteran in Congress, so his death really marks the end of an era.
Aside from the personal tragedy, his death at this time means that Governor Fucktard* gets to appoint a successor to finish out the term. God only knows what kind of disaster we're in for.
* Yes, it's an insensitive term. But I think we all know that I'm not mocking the mentally challenged in general, only Christie.

Because I got home late last night and immediately tuned to ion tv, where I watched several episodes of Criminal Minds (good lord, that show is creepy!) before falling asleep, I completely missed all the coverage and pontificating by various media blowhards. It really took all my willpower to go to the Times this morning, but what a wonderful headline when I did!
Not only did Obama win, but Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) are going back to the Senate, and they're taking Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) with them!!
And in NJ, voters passed both questions! The first will provide money for capital improvements to the state's public universities and colleges, including some of the larger community colleges. Yay - perhaps now we'll be able to afford fixing the roof! The second requires judges to contribute to their health insurance and retirement, just like the rest of us.
But best of all: Donald Trump is very, very unhappy!

Mittens is still overseas and apparently has given Israel the green light to attack Iran. Perhaps someone should point out that he isn't even the official Republican presidential candidate yet, much less the actual president.
Unless of course he thinks cozying up to Israel will make up for alienating the Brits.

Nov. 19th, 2011 09:39 amEnough people have posted about stopping the passage of Evil-Internet-Breaking-Legislation SOPA, so I'm going to repost this instead because I think it's just as important.

You know what makes me sad? There was a time when I would be jumping up and down and screaming with joy over this news. These days, I'm just taking a I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it approach. I hate being this cynical.
However, this frees up several hundred billion $ per year if it's true. Think of the mammograms, and teachers, and solar panels, and new bridges that money could buy. Or, you know, we could pay some bills and put the rest of it in the bank. ;)

So last night, the House passed HR 358, AKA the "Protect Life Act." This is the bill that would allow hospitals to let women die rather than perform a life-saving abortion. It's not expected to pass the Senate or to be signed by the President even if enough Senators did lose their collective minds.
This is not my issue any more, thank TPTB. However, I am really, really, really tired of this shit. I am tired of men who think that they have any right whatsoever to dictate what a woman does with her body and/or with any parasitic clump of cells that may be inhabiting it. An adult woman is a full human being, with all the rights and privileges attached to that status. And when it comes to issues dealing with pregnancy, if you don't have a second X chromosome, You. Should. Just. Shut. The. Fuck. Up.
Disclaimer: Yes, it is indeed a whole different ball of wax when you are in a committed relationship with someone who has granted you the right to comment on her reproductive choices. I'm not talking about that scenario, so do NOT give me any crap.
I'm just so very tired of these men who only want to saaaaaave the baybeeeeeees.

Within a 48-hour period, the NJ Legislature passed a law denying public employees the right to negotiate many conditions of their working lives and the NY Legislature passed a law allowing an oppressed minority the basic Human right to marry. Clearly, the traditional NY attitude of condescension toward NJ is correct after all.
ETA: The NYT has a fascinating story on what it took to get NY's marriage equality bill passed. I recommend it to anyone interested in what our Republic has become.

They're talking on the CBS Early Show about the governor of Indiana, who many repugs want to run for president. The reporter said that "popular NJ Governor Chris Christie" has indicated that he'll support him. Clearly, she's never been to NJ, where even the most loyal rats are starting to desert that particular sinking ship.
I give my last exam today, and the last set of papers come in by 5:00. Then it's just the grading, which won't actually be too bad this time. I hope.

Mar. 10th, 2011 01:19 pmWe've been looking at places for this year's summer vacation. Because traveling has gotten more complicated in the last eight months or so, we were looking at places in Michigan and Wisconsin.
Unless things change very soon (by which I mean before reservations need to be made), I will not be going to Wisconsin.
