As of 9:12 last night, the Fall 2012 semester is over (except for some grading) for me. To celebrate, let me share a taste of yesterday morning. :)
A student walks into the classroom at 9:30 for an exam that began at 8:00. "The exam starts now?" he asks. "The exam started at 8:00," I reply. "Oh, I didn't know. Can I take it now?" Despite the statement on the syllabus that no one will be allowed to take the exam after others have completed it and left, I let him take it because it's Christmas and I don't want my holiday ruined by the shitstorm that would follow if I didn't. He finished in 35 minutes. I'm sure it will be a joy to grade.
(I feel obliged to point out, just for the record, that the day, date, and time of the exam is printed on the syllabus in two places. In the second location, it is printed in 16-point Times New Roman, all caps, bolded, with arrows pointing to it. They have had the syllabus from Day One of the semester, and I have a signed sheet of paper from this guy attesting that he has read and understood the syllabus. In addition, I have mentioned the day and time of the exam at every class meeting for the past two weeks. So what is wrong with this guy, you may ask. He is a sad victim of The New Binky. I have literally never seen him without his phone, texting of course. And the cherry on top is the fact that he's graduating. I'm sure he will be a wonderful employee for some lucky business person!)
So Merry Christmas to all!
