chalcedony: (geologist)
I've given up on the project to post every day in November. This year, November won, and I find myself wondering how I managed to do it last year.

I had a pretty pleasant weekend. Saturday, a bunch of us went hiking up in northwestern NJ. It was only an elevation difference of about 250 feet, which is nothing compared to some of the elevation gains you get out west, but it was difficult hiking, particularly since my knee (the one I injured on the Appalachian Trail many years ago) has been bothering me for the past couple of weeks. First of all, the state doesn't maintain the trails the way the Parks Service does, so even the flat parts were pretty rocky and covered with leaves and needles. The trail also contains many places my friend Karen calls "rock scrambles." I call them opportunities for rock climbing. ;) A bit difficult, especially in 35-degree weather. But worth it – the area around the lake was lovely, and the geology is fantastic. It was too cold to stop often along the trail, so I didn't take many pictures; I'll have to go back in the spring.

I did freak out a couple of my friends on the way back down, however. At one point, I was uncomfortable with the "trail" they were taking around a very large and fairly sheer drop, so I just went down the face, rock climbing style. Much faster, even without the correct shoes, and no broad vistas to make me even slightly dizzy. And I swear I thought they knew I used to climb on a regular basis.

My original plans for yesterday were cancelled due to illness, so Judi and I went the local googolplex to see a movie. We were fairly up in the air about which of several possibilities to see, but we finally settled on Twilight. We agreed that it was not nearly so bad as we had expected, probably because so much from the book was left out. What did surprise us was the number of empty seats. Not a blockbuster by my standards. I have to say though that I think the best part was the preview for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. :)
