* Yeah, probably not.  But it certainly seemed that way to me.  Thank God for Stephen Colbert.

Over, over, over!

We've managed to complete another turn around the Sun.  I hope that the next one will be wonderful for you and all of your loved ones!

Hang in there.

The Christmas cards have successfully morphed into New Year's cards and will be posted today.  Yay!  (It's the little things that make me happy.)

I've said it before, and I still believe it, so I'll probably say it again.  The greatest divide in the human race isn't between "races" or "generations", or even between rich and poor.  It's between male and female.  It's a wonder we manage to breed at all.

chalcedony: (happy birthday)
Google has informed me that today is Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday.  Technically, today would have been his birthday if he hadn't died eighteen years ago, but details like that seem to have disappeared from the language and public awareness these days.

Anyway ...

Believe it or not, he means a great deal to me.  Back in the Cretaceous, he hosted a semi-regular series called Young People's Concerts on TV.  For many Boomers, myself included, they were our first introduction to classical music.  (My parents had already taken care of jazz and Broadway show tunes.)

I loved those shows, and it was darned near impossible to pry me away from the set when one was on.  The thing I remember most about them, aside from the amazing music, was that he talked directly into the camera as he explained a piece of music or why the orchestra had as many violinists as it did.  Most importantly, he never spoke down to his young viewers.

So thank you, Maestro, for those concerts and West Side Story

Kudos to Lonnie Quinn of Channel 2 in NYC, who just gave an EXCELLENT explanation on CBS This Morning of the differences between Kilauea and Volcan de Fuego, complete with holographic diagrams. (Okay, he didn't talk about the geochemistry, but that probably would have been too much to ask of a meteorologist!)

It's a boy

The three anchors on CBS This Morning just interrupted themselves to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge has had a boy.  And that the hairdresser has just left the hospital!

As thoroughly American as I am, and as strongly as I would resist any type of monarchy, I am tickled every time a royal baby is born.  I hope the little guy has a good life.

Plus, Uncle Harry is now one step farther away from the throne, which I'm sure delights him and soon-to-be Aunt Meghan.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!

I don't need a new Kindle.  I DON"T need a new Kindle.  I DO NOT NEED A NEW KINDLE!

(But I want one.)

Wow

Moffett better have some prime mojo up his sleeve in order to fix the outcome of last night's cliffhanger.  Seriously.

I was just reading an interview with John Waters in the NYT that was linked to by [personal profile] thesarahscope, and they asked him the following question:

You’re organizing a literary dinner party. Which three writers, dead or alive, do you invite?

It's a question I've seen in one form or another many times, but never really thought about, much less answered. So I'd have to say: Isaac Newton, Jane Austen, and Isaac Asimov.

How about you?

Oh dear

Except for a couple of 15-20 minute breaks at various times, I have slept all day long.  Of course this means that if anyone is in the mood to chat at 4:00 tomorrow morning, I will be awake and able to participate.

Ha ha

Perhaps our reality-TV president should consider going back from whence he came.  Since "The Apprentice" has been cancelled, I'd like to suggest that he try "The Biggest LOSER"!
