On my way

I had wanted to leave the house around 10 this morning, but of course I didn't get out until about 11, which really wasn't all that bad. (I got onto 287 at 11:20 to be exact, after gas and cash.) What a gorgeous day it was for driving - sunny, mid 70s, and low humidity. I didn't even bother with the air conditioning until I hit Hartford and a traffic jam, and then again when I hit Rt. 128 at 3:30 and the ever-present jam there.

Taylor House is a lovely old Victorian just off Jamaicaway in Jamaica Plains. Our room is quite large and very pretty and the bathroom even has a ball and claw foot tub. I'm not sure how I feel about that. There are also two Goldens who live here, Wags and her son Parker. I know exactly how I feel about that.

I lolled around for a while and then called Rigel and Frank. It turns out Rigel is in CT all week for a music workshop. So Frank and I went out to dinner at a place called Cafe D Bistro, which was very good, and then went for ice cream at P.J. Licks, which was amazing. I was unadventurous and had the chocolate chip, but Frank had "fresh cucumber." He gave me a taste, and it was astounding. It really did taste like cucumber.

After ice cream, we drove over to MIT to see his lab. We passed Fenway on the way (the Red Sox were playing Toronto and it is an important series for them) and I was surprised at how small it is. Even the Green Monster. Huh, who knew? Anyway, the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences building was designed by I.M. Pei and is ugly as sin. The eleventh floor, where the geochronology lab is located, is quite cramped, with cases and boxes full of rocks stored in the hallways. I felt right at home. Frank showed me the two mass spectrophotometers and some very interesting work he's doing on conodonts from China. It almost made me want to go back to an R1. Almost.

After the lab, we drove out to Billerica to see their house. Rigel called while we were driving, so I got to talk to her after all. The house is going to be gorgeous when it's finished.
